ULINE Arena

ULINE Arena

Application:
Interiors
Building Type:
Class A Office

From the architect: “Antunovich Associates collaborated with Douglas Development Corporation on a new mixed-use redevelopment at the Uline Arena, in the burgeoning NoMa neighborhood of Washington, D.C. This 2.5-acre site was occupied by two historic buildings: The Uline Arena building, home to the first live Beatles performance in the United States in 1964, and the Icehouse Building, a significant masonry building originally used to create the ice for skating and ice hockey events at the Uline Arena.

The new development, known as Uline Arena, has over 70,000 square feet of retail space, 180,000 square feet of office space, and over 167 parking spaces on a new above-ground parking structure. It features a new interior courtyard designed to provide abundant natural sunlight for the office space and to create a calming urban respite for office employees, away from the bustling neighborhood around them.

The Coliseum revitalized this culturally and architecturally significant site and infill the existing neighborhood streetscape with exciting, lively urban activity.”

Winner of the 2017 Presidential Citation for Urban Catalyst Award for the Washington DC AIA Chapter, this 2.5 acre parcel houses180,000 sf of office space and 70,000 sf of retail.

Terrazzo was used for all main lobby and corridors in the office spaces at Uline. The pattern design featured a dark border and two subtly different field colors with zinc divider strips set in an ashlar type pattern.

One of the most striking aspects of the design is the planter in the main lobby, flush with the terrazzo elevation. The perimeter was created using 4” of sand and epoxy mortar on top of the ragged CMU block to create the “fingers”. Planter was trimmed out with a custom 3” zinc strip to create a continuous metal finish where exposed in the planter pit.

PPSI worked with Antunovich Architects to develop custom terrazzo mixes for this project. This project had 3 colors, 2 of which incorporated a recycled stained glass aggregate, a contributing factor to this LEED Gold project
